Spring 2009 Newsletter: The Chanteloup Planter by Charlotte Moss
The multi-talented Charlotte Moss has created the Chanteloup Planter for our American Collection of terra cotta planters designed by top American talent and handmade in Impruneta, Italy.
This glorious chinoiserie planter was inspired by the Pagoda at Chanteloup in France’s Loire Valley. Designed by architect Louis-Denis le Camus and built in 1775, the Chanteloup Pagoda is the only structure remaining of the chateau built by the Duc de Choiseul. Ms. Moss derived here inspiration for the planter on a visit to the Pagoda several years ago.
In Charlotte’s words: "I climbed the seven stories by an interior circular staircase, passing by balustrades and window grilles all made from different Chinese fretwork patterns and ideograms that represent love, wisdom, and friendship. I will always associate fretwork with Chanteloup." And, indeed, the Chanteloup Planter is embellished with magnificent fretwork executed in terra cotta.
This elegant planter is perfection as a focal point in a garden or flanking an entrance to a stately home.
