Winterizing Your Pots

Winterizing Your Pots

Seibert & Rice terra cotta is the most durable terra cotta in the world. The combination of the chemical composition of the Impruneta clay and the high firing process used there means these pots can be left outdoors year round in even the harshest climates.

However, we strongly recommend that you follow these simple procedures if leaving your pots outdoors this winter:

  1. The pots must be lifted an inch or more off the ground, so that there is ample space between the drainage hole and the ground. Don't assume an uneven surface, gravel, or a deck with slats is enough. You must elevate the pot. Our pot feet or wedges will do the trick, or simply place bricks or wooden blocks under the pot.
  2. Make sure the drainage holes are clear and free of debris.
  3. Do not use saucers outside in the winter. (Water collects in the saucer and prevents the pot from draining properly.)
  4. It is better to leave soil in the pot than to leave the pot empty. Empty pots tend to fill with leaves and other debris that can clog the drainage hole and allow water to accumulate.
